Introduction

What is love? We all know that song by Haddaway that I remember being played at my middle school and high school dances. But really what is it? Well what better person to help us better understand this complex concept than from the master of love himself. Shakespeare has written numerous plays that explore this concept in a number of different ways. Now I know you all are probably thinking Yeah okay Ms. Fortin, but I don't know what the heck he is saying most of the time. Is your fear of the unfamiliar language hold you back from falling in love with Shakespeare's work? Well this web quest is going to change that and prove to you that love can conquer all; even your fear of Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is a wonderful text to start practicing how to read and interpret Shakespearean language. This play is filled with comedy, betrayal, and most of all love. Through the exploration of this web quest and with the right attitude, you will fall in love with Shakespeare and develop a deeper understanding of what love means and is through several different character perspectives. So give Shakespeare a chance and let the love in!

Task

Film makers from Miramax Films (who created an action packed modern day adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet) are planning to take on the challenge of creating another Shakespeare play: this time a parody of Much Ado About Nothing. Being not as familiar with this play, these film makers are looking for Shakespearean experts that are very knowledgeable about the play. Your job is to create a movie trailer to present to the film makers as part of the 2014 Shakespeare Festival in Utah. As part of the movie trailer requirements, the film makers are looking for a movie trailer that encompasses the play's dramatic structure (without completely spoiling the plot), a fusion of both Shakespearean language and modern day speech, accurate character portrayals and developments, and a trailer that captures the central theme of the play. The film makers of the winning trailer will be presented with job opportunities to work with Miramax film makers in the creation and production of the play's adaptation.

Conclusion

So after reading and creating a modern day movie trailer adaptation for Much Ado About Nothing what do you think love is? There are so many different interpretations of love as well as different ways to express love. Some give hugs, some give kisses, or some (like Shakespeare) write these comically beautiful plays that reveal the joy, troubles, immaturity, passion, unexpectedness, and vulnerability that love brings to both individual lives and the world on a larger scale. Couldn't you say that this is true about today? Whether it is familial love, spousal love, or love between friends, love is complicated, confusing, and an inevitable part of life. We all know when we feel it though and we all choose to express it in our own way. Love is different to all of us, but we all commonly struggle with how to put this complex emotion into words. Great work! I hope that Shakespeare was able to capture your hearts in this web quest!
